Fallout 76: Wasteland Ironman Rules
14 July 2026
A self-imposed Fallout 76 challenge where every weapon and piece of armour must be crafted by the character. No trading, no player vendors, no stash box, and no donated items.
Leaving the safety of Vault 76 behind, the journey to rebuild Appalachia from scratch begins.
Welcome to Wasteland Ironman! I've played Fallout 76 on and off since launch, and after hundreds of hours I realised I'd begun skipping much of the game's progression through trading, player vendors, and accumulated resources. Wasteland Ironman is my way of rediscovering Appalachia by earning everything myself, one crafted item at a time. This challenge is my attempt to recreate the self-sufficient experience of Old School RuneScape's Ironman mode in Fallout 76. Instead of relying on other players, everything important must be earned through exploration, crafting, and completing the game's content. The goal isn't simply to make Fallout 76 more difficult—it's to make every piece of progress feel earned.
This page acts as the official ruleset for the series. Whenever a rule changes, this post will be updated so there's always one place to check exactly what is and isn't allowed.
Core Rules
- No trading with other players.
- No purchasing items from player vendors.
- No using the Stash Box.
- No taking donated items from other players or donation boxes.
- Only weapons and armour crafted by this character may be equipped. Looted or rewarded equipment may be scrapped or exchanged for Legendary Scrip where permitted, but may never be used in combat or worn.
- Plans must be earned naturally through quests, events, or NPC vendors.
- Progress should come from your own effort rather than shortcuts.
Allowed Exceptions
Some restrictions make the challenge more enjoyable, while others simply create unnecessary frustration. The following exceptions are allowed.
- Fast travel to free locations.
- Fast travel to Public Events.
- After completing a Public Event, fast travel back to your previous location.
- Quest rewards may be accepted. Equipment rewards may be exchanged for Legendary Scrip rather than used.
- Atomic Shop cosmetics and utility items are permitted.
- CAMP building is unrestricted.
- Shelters may be used.
Why These Rules?
Fallout 76 is designed around player interaction, trading, and sharing resources. Those systems are great, but they also allow players to skip huge parts of the progression curve.
By removing trading, player vendors, and donated equipment, every upgrade has to be earned. Finding the materials for a new weapon, unlocking the plans to craft it, and finally building it yourself makes each milestone far more satisfying.
Banning the Stash Box forces difficult decisions about what is worth carrying, adding another layer of survival without turning the game into a permadeath challenge.
The exceptions exist simply because they remove unnecessary tedium rather than adding meaningful difficulty. Fast travelling to events, using CAMP building features, and enjoying cosmetic purchases all improve the overall experience without undermining the spirit of the challenge.
Series Goals
- Complete every main questline.
- Finish all major DLC stories.
- Build multiple lore-friendly CAMPs.
- Craft every weapon and armour upgrade myself.
- Never rely on another player's equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use Legendary rewards?
Legendary equipment earned as quest rewards can be exchanged for Legendary Scrip instead of being equipped. The goal is still to craft and roll my own gear.
Why didn't you pick up that weapon?
If it wasn't crafted by the character, it can't be used. Looted equipment can still be scrapped or exchanged where appropriate, but not equipped.
Can you use player vendors?
No. All plans, equipment, and resources must come from the game itself.
Can you use Atomic Shop items?
Yes. Cosmetic items and account-wide purchases don't affect progression and are therefore allowed.
Is this a permadeath challenge?
No. The challenge is focused on self-sufficiency rather than one-life survival.
